When you compare cabinet quotes, the price gap often comes down to one thing you’ll never see once the kitchen is installed: what the boxes are actually made of. Most low-cost cabinets are built from particle board or MDF. We build only with CARB2-certified plywood. Here’s the difference, and why it’s worth caring about — for both durability and the air in your home.

First, the health side

Particle board and MDF are made by binding wood fibres with resins, and many of those resins contain formaldehyde, which off-gasses into your home for years after installation. Formaldehyde is classified by the World Health Organization as a known human carcinogen. In a kitchen — the room your family spends the most time in — that’s not a detail to wave away.

CARB2 (the California Air Resources Board Phase 2 standard) is the strictest formaldehyde-emissions standard in North America. Building to it means dramatically lower off-gassing and cleaner indoor air. We hold every panel we use to that standard. It costs us more. We think the air in your home is worth more.

The kitchen-sink test

The clearest example is the cabinet under your sink. A small, slow leak is almost inevitable over a kitchen’s life. Particle board under there swells, sags, and falls apart — it’s the most common cabinet failure we’re called to replace. Plywood shrugs off the same exposure. When the material has to survive moisture, plywood isn’t a luxury; it’s the difference between a repair and a rebuild.

Why cheaper cabinets feel like a deal (until they don’t)

Particle-board cabinets are genuinely cheaper to produce, so they win on the sticker price. But you often pay twice: once now, and again when sagging shelves, stripped hinges, or a swollen sink base force an early replacement. Plywood costs more up front and far less over the life of the kitchen.
