Custom vs Semi-Custom vs Flat-Pack Cabinets: Which Is Right for You?

Custom vs Semi-Custom vs Flat-Pack Cabinets: Which Is Right for You?

When you start shopping for new kitchen cabinets, three words come up again and again: custom, semi-custom and flat-pack. They get thrown around loosely, the prices are all over the map, and nobody really explains the difference in plain English. So let’s fix that.

We build all three every week, so here’s the honest version — what each one actually means, who it’s right for, and how to choose without second-guessing yourself later.

The part nobody tells you first

Here’s the thing most cabinet ads skip: all three of our lines can be built from the same materials. The same CARB2-certified plywood box. The same screwed dado joint that keeps it square for decades. The same German Blum and Hettich hinges and runners. The same lifetime warranty.

What actually changes between custom, semi-custom and flat-pack isn’t really quality — it’s how much is tailored to you, and who does the installing. Once you see it that way, the choice gets a lot simpler.

Custom cabinets — your kitchen, exactly

Custom means we design and build around your space and habits. Awkward corner? We solve it. Want a cabinet sized to the exact width your wall allows? Done. A spice pull-out beside the stove, a hidden recycling centre, an appliance lift in the island — all on the table.

It’s the most hands-on option (and the most expensive), but there’s no wasted space and nothing about it feels off-the-shelf. If you’ve got an unusual layout, a strong vision, or you just want it done once and done right, this is your lane. More on custom cabinets →

Semi-custom — the sweet spot for most kitchens

Semi-custom gives you a generous menu of sizes, door styles and finishes — designed, delivered and installed by our crew — for roughly 20% less than full custom. You’re choosing from a well-considered range rather than starting from a blank page, which keeps the price down without making the kitchen feel generic.

For a lot of Island homes, this is the practical winner: you still get a designer, a 3D rendering and a professional install, just without paying for the fully bespoke parts you may not need. More on semi-custom →

Flat-pack — the best value, if you’ll install

Flat-pack is the same quality cabinet, custom-sized to your measurements, shipped flat for you or your contractor to assemble and install. Because you’re supplying the labour, you can save up to 45%.

It’s ideal for confident DIYers, contractors, rental upgrades, laundry rooms and remote builds up-Island where install logistics get expensive. The trade-off is honest: assembly and installation are on you. If that doesn’t faze you, it’s hard to beat on price. More on flat-pack →

So which one is right for you?

  • Pick custom if you have a tricky layout, specific materials in mind, or you simply want the best and want it managed end-to-end.
  • Pick semi-custom if you want a designer-built, professionally installed kitchen at a friendlier price — the right call for most people.
  • Pick flat-pack if you’re handy or have a contractor, and squeezing the most value out of your budget matters more than having us install.

Still torn? That’s normal — and it’s exactly what a free consultation is for. You can also see all three side by side on our Compare Cabinet Lines page.

One honest note

We’re at our best on complete projects — a full kitchen, a full set of new cabinets, or a built-in from scratch. We’re not the right fit for tiny repairs like swapping a single hinge or replacing one or two doors on an existing kitchen; a local handyman will do those faster and cheaper. But if you’re planning something bigger, we’d love to help.

FAQ

Is semi-custom lower quality than custom?

No. The box, joinery and hardware are the same — semi-custom simply works from a set range of sizes and finishes instead of a blank page, which keeps the price down.

Can I install flat-pack myself with no experience?

Many people do, but it helps to be comfortable with basic tools and levelling. If you’re unsure, semi-custom (installed by us) is the safer choice.
